Local Motion, Leigh 2012

Local Motion is a permanent sculpture intended to create a public space and make an entrance. Two undulating benches flank the plaza in front of the Leigh Sports Village Stadium. The profile of each bench was created by tracking the trajectory of the knees and ankles of members of the local football team running toward the stadium. The trajectory is recretaed at 1:1 and when people pass between the benches at night, the speed and motion is replayed in an animated sequence of light along each bench.

The artwork was commissioned by Wigan Council and fabricated by Millimetre. Denki-Jin provided the sensing and control of the dynamic lighting. Film and photos by James Medcraft. The artwork profile was taken from film footage of Kirsty Chapman and Lauren Hardman from the Girls Football Development Programme at Wigan and Leigh College.
